I decided to do this here instead of on Twitter because I think I've spammed enough.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional musician or anything of the sort, this is just me trying to put in writing the chaos that goes on in my head lol.
1. Darl+ing — I mean we already know this song but I wasn’t on here when it came out so. I love this song, it’s such a happy, feel-good spring song. (Even though I hate that it’s in english and am against any and all US expansion marketing initiatives. Stop this, Hybe.)
2. HOT — I said this in frantic text messages to equally frantic friends as we all lost our collective minds but... This sounds like HIT and Getting Closer had a monster baby and I am ALL FOR IT. I do think autotune needs to be banished from existence but I guess, if I were to be generous, at least the use of autotune here is somewhat... tasteful?
MV Comments: SVT HOT. That's it. But, for real, you can tell they're all feeling themselves (especially one Kwon Hoshi).
3. DON QUIXOTE — Okay, I am pleasantly surprised by how soft the melody starts despite the harder beats in the instrumental. I really like how they've used the difference in the members' vocals tones for this song, especially Wonwoo's deep vocals. Listening to this song feels like it's telling me a story, I don't really know how else to describe.
4. March — This rock intro?? This is giving me 90s synth rock vibes, I really like it already even though I'm only 30s in. Okay, the synth base really does it for me for some reason. But why is this whole album like cowboy-themed so far? Is this what happens when you hire western producers? (I have more thoughts on the fact that they hired people outside prismfilter for this album but I won't go into that right now).
5. Domino — Oooh. The instrumental gives me maplestory kerning city vibes (if you know you know). Wow, I said that before getting to the first chorus but it is even more pronounced in the chorus LOL. I really am a huge fan of these throwback retro vibes though and that contrast between the rap and the soft vocals? *chefs kiss*. I honestly didn't think I would like this song as much but, I do.
6. Shadow — Ah, this is the song that is going to be my favourite - this was the first thing I thought when I heard the intro instrumental. Seventeen has other songs that sound like this and they always end up being my favourite (Lie Again, Heaven's Cloud, All My Love, Kidult). I don't know what it is about this type of sound, I don't even know how to describe it if I'm being honest, but it is the Lauv/Chainsmokers type of pop song sound? WOW. SCOUPS doing the rough vocals? I really like it when they let HHU sing because they all have such unique vocal tones that really contrast the other members' since most of them have slightly higher pitched tones.
7. 'bout you — A happy song! Ooh, okay, that chorus harmony sounded so 90s boy group harmony but in the good way. Unfortunately, their cuter songs always tend to be on the bottom of my SVT songs ranking and I think this one might have to join them. It's not a bad song and I do think SVT albums are actually no-skips but, you know, we all have preferences and cute songs Do Not Do It For Me. I do think it is one of those songs that would probably make you smile if you bop along but I am also a scorpio moon so I prefer listening to sad songs in general.
8. IF you leave me — Ahh yes, the piano intro. VOCALS. God, I really do like it when they do canon vocals (or however you call that thing they do where it sounds like they're singing responses to each other. My stupid catholic school experience keeps wanting to say responsorial psalm singing LMAO). Piano songs really do it for me though, I love soft songs like this where it is mainly piano + vocals.
9. Ash — OH YES? THAT INTRO? Ah... the autotune makes a comeback. Damn it's a sexy sounding instrumental though. This sounds like the song they'll be performing alongside HOT. Honestly, I want the raw instrumental for this because that synth sound oh my god. This song gives me dark red and black vibes, I don't know how else to describe it but I love it. Every time SVT does a darker sounding song I'm like YES, GIVE IT TO ME. This could actually be Getting Closer ver. 2.0.
OKAY, I'm done. I think, as of now, my favourite songs are Shadow, Ash and March (excluding title song), but that could change the more I listen. If you actually read all of that, please remember I am not a trained musician or anything and most of this was whatever popped into my head as I listened to the album.
